The nms303 project: two years after the first sketches...

Solo experience, starting from scratch, step by step development...

>

> May 2020:

After 25 years of electronic music hibernation, undertake everything in a short time...

Conception & concretization of the adventure under the model of the economic sobriety...

Starting postulates: coherence, simplicity, authenticity, transparency, autonomy, freedom...

On the program: discoveries, experiences and multiple learning!

Approach: a framework, a roadmap, a development as we go along...

Extracts from the logbook :

Diving into a "new world!" Well almost! (LOL) At least, the one after the "Y2K bug!" I had stayed there! (LOL)

- The tools of the 90's having obviously evolved into more and more sophisticated software solutions delegating a good number of aspects to ever more powerful algorithms, facilitating and "democratizing" both the uses and the production methods. "Infinite" possibilities and time saving for some, a "trick" to expression and creativity for others... A bit of both certainly...

- Composers, producers, DJs and "artists" of all electronic horizons having become actors as essential as "heavy" of a flourishing musical industry (at least before the pandemic...).

("The underground, the spirit of yesteryear", the one of the beginnings, the one of the pioneers, having "withered" in front of the profit, the navel-gazing and the starization of the icons making the crowds dance in the festivals taken in the four corners of the planet. The disused factories of the first rave parties have become "mythical places" accessible only to the holders of a "precious sesame" opening the doors of "communalized" universes, prized and coated with rhinestones and sequins...)

Was it better before? That is not the question. Obviously, the "biotope", the "soil" & the "climate" were different... The avant-gardism of an emerging counterculture only attracted the initiated and the curious. The ecosystem was different... However, if you look at it closely, the seeds of its success were already present... And then, as soon as electronic music, once considered "heretical" and "passing", crossed the threshold of the mainstream media, the mass was said! (LOL)

- Self-production is fashionable but the myth of the "snowball effect" widening the field of distribution is largely "thwarted" by the elbow-to-elbow and voracious appetite of the players already in place and the various promotional lobbies. Not to mention that the return on investment only concerns "large volumes", in other words, if the "label/independent artist" concept is attractive, its economic viability (in the conventional format) only depends on what it generates... And in order to "generate" one must first invest, more than invest! One must respond to the habits and customs of marketing 2.0, a real propaganda for techniques that transgress artistic naivety for the sole benefit of capital profitability. In short, as far as I'm concerned, well aware of things before starting my modest journey, I just wanted to "do my thing in my corner" at a lower cost while remaining at a distance from any form of servitude...

>> May 2022:

After two years and a hundred or so titles as a "transparent" inventory of approximations & youthful errors, as much as of the hazards that have marked out a sinuous path, the observation is clear: the "artistic naivety" of the beginnings has given way to the reality of a well-established industry... Make way for "standards", make way for "lobbying", make way for "power games", make way for "cartels..." Nevertheless, creating and distributing is now much easier than before. With little means, passion, resourcefulness and a bit of audacity, one can always try to venture into an electronic musical universe that reflects the society from which it emanates. To evolve there as a "free electron" is a luxury which allows to temporarily extract oneself from the dominant models but which also implies to rely only on oneself, even if it reduces the exposure and the audience! Claiming a certain ethic or principles implies knowing what you want, or at least what you don't want! Perhaps it is simply to be content with the pleasure of the "artistic" process... In other words, to seek, to develop, to create while constantly questioning oneself! It is also to consider the recognition of the greatest number as not essential! This also means not allowing oneself to be seduced by the slew of paid subscriptions and other derivative products promising wonders... Therefore, if things are clear from the start and the lure of money or fame are not the driving forces of the approach, then only the journey matters, the destination being of little importance! Because, in spite of the fact that the return on investment is illusory, that the promotional aspect is limited to a "one shot" exposure on social networks at each achievement, I pursue my solo route very modestly, placing autonomy as a founding pillar. (My determination to do things at my own pace and according to my own principles is worth what it is worth! Everyone is free to do as they please. I don't get hung up on myself. I simply put my cards on the table and don't hide anything. And where some people display their "medals and trophies" personally, I don't have any complexes about exposing figures that are largely "pitiful" by the standards in place! (LOL) At least they are not "artificial!"
